Text
“Liluli” is an anti-militarist farce by Romain Rolland, written in the wake of the First World War and published in 1919. The play unfolds as a “theatrum mundi” of political violence, reconstructing the fatal coalition of capital, nationalist propaganda and intellectual disorientation that transformed Europe into a suicidal slaughterhouse. Schürmann transposes the text into the present, exploring the potential of allegorical theatre as a dramaturgical device that allows humans to play gods: Having returned from the end of history, a group of dubious divine agents sets out to construct viable dwellings from the ruins of modern illusions.
